Given that Pi Day is a momentous day in the year, I recycle an oldie…

A happy pi day to all!  Did you know…

  • Pi is defined as the ratio of the Circumference to the Diameter of a circle
  • Pi is the first letter of the greek word for perimeter.
  • Pi makes an appearance in an episode of Star Trek: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H20cKjz-bjw, which, contrary to my initial hopes, actually adds to the geekiness of this post
  • Given the impossibility of today’s date in dd/mm format, Pi Day is celebrated on the 22nd of July in those countries.  22/7 was Archimedes’ first approximation of pi.
  • In our financial field, pi shows up with the bell curve and therefore the Black-Scholes formula (to name a few)
  • The probability that you made it to this last is roughly 1/π.
